The Governments of Vietnam and Laos have agreed to deepen their strategic partnership by advancing major transport infrastructure, logistics connectivity and economic cooperation following talks between Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to elevating bilateral relations through practical implementation of the Vietnam-Laos “strategic connectivity” framework while preparing to implement the 2026-2030 bilateral cooperation agreement and commemorative activities marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027.
Both countries identified transport connectivity as a key priority, agreeing to accelerate strategic projects including the Hanoi-Vientiane Expressway and the Vung Ang-Vientiane railway. Vietnam also pledged to support Laos’ ambition of becoming a regional logistics hub by improving its access to maritime trade routes. The two sides will work towards increasing bilateral trade to US$10 billion by 2030, while creating a more transparent and favourable investment environment for businesses. Vietnamese investment in Laos reached US$582 million in the first quarter of 2026, bringing cumulative investment to approximately US$6.6 billion across 289 projects.
The two governments also agreed to expand cooperation in education, science and technology, including plans to establish the Laos-Vietnam Friendship University in Laos. In addition, they reaffirmed cooperation on defence, border security, climate action, energy security, cybersecurity and regional coordination through ASEAN and other multilateral forums, underscoring their long-term commitment to sustainable economic development and regional integration.
