Vietnam Airlines has submitted a proposal to the Ministries of Transport and Planning and Investment, and the Commission for the Management of State Capital at Enterprises to invest around VND10 trillion (USD433 million) in infrastructure development at the Long Thanh International Airport, 40 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam Airlines plans to raise 70 per cent of the proposed investment through loans, and 30 per cent through equity. The airlines plans to spend the money on the supply of aviation fuel, ground operations, catering, a cargo terminal, an aviation logistics centre, airline lounges, and duty-free retail. It has also requested the construction of an exclusive terminal for Vietnam Airlines and its subsidiaries and possibly an MRO facility at the airport.

Construction on the airport began on January 5, 2021. The airport will include four runways and four terminals with the capacity to process 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo per year. It will be built in three phases until 2040.
