The Vientiane Sustainable Urban Transport Project plans to establish eight parking zones in the downtown areas of Chanthabouly and Sisattanak districts in preparation for the upcoming Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Laos. The zones will be strategically located near Chao Fa Ngum, Inpeng Temple, and Ongtue Temple, offering motorists a dedicated space before the BRT becomes operational.
Parking fees will be set at LAK 80 per minute for cars and LAK 40 per minute for motorbikes. Once the BRT starts, Setthathirath Road—from Inpeng Temple intersection to Hor Kham (Presidential Palace) T-intersection—will be cleared of all roadside parking to improve traffic flow and ensure smooth public transport operations. Residents without private parking may access monthly subscription options at designated areas such as Chao Fa Ngum Park and the Vientiane Capital Education and Sports Department compound.
A three-month trial phase of the BRT system will allow free public rides, including during the That Luang Festival 2025 (November 1–5). The trial aims to refine operations and ensure the system is ready for full public service.
