Universal Robina Corporation (URC) has inaugurated a 46 MW biomass power plant in Kabankalan City, Negros Islands. This marks the company’s entry into the renewable energy space. While 23 MW of output will go to the national grid under a 25-year operating contract with the Philippines’ DOE, the other half will be used by URC’s sugar mill. The plant will use bagasse, which is a by-product of URC’s sugar mill in Kabankalan, as the main fuel.
