The TuasOne waste-to-energy facility is expected to become operational in January 2021. The facility, which is at least 96 per cent complete, was to have been completed in May 2019. But the project got delayed due to the implementing agency Hyflux Limited’s lack of funds. The project, which will provide waste treatment services exclusively to Singapore’s National Environment Agency for 25 years, was awarded to Hyflux and its Japanese partner Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in September 2015 under the design-build-own-operate scheme. The water treatment company has transferred the remainder of TuasOne’s engineering, procurement and construction contract to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific for completion of the project. It, however, remains the majority shareholder of the TuasOne project with a 75 per cent stake, while Mitsubishi Heavy Industries holds the other 25 per cent. The plant aims to add 3,600 tonnes of incineration capacity per day to Singapore’s waste disposal system.
