China-based Trina Solar Company Limited has secured a contract from Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) to build a large-scale floating solar facility in Malaysia. The 50 MW facility will be located on Batang Ai hydroelectric dam.

The floating solar farm will feature N-type bi-facial high efficiency photovoltaic modules. String inverters will be to optimise performance and reduce the levelized cost of electricity. Scope of work also includes upgrading the high-voltage substation.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Once operational, energy generated from the solar farm will be supplied to the Sarawak grid.

The project is part of SEB’s aim to install 400 MW of floating power capacity at its hydro dams by 2030.
