Japan-based Toshiba Corporation has secured a contract from Singapore-based public transport operator SMRT Corporation Limited. The contract involves supplying permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and peripheral equipment to refurbish the drive systems of 66 C151 series train sets comprising six cars each. The PMSM system is also expected to cut power consumption by 30 per cent, reduce operating noise levels, and improve the operating efficiency of the trains. The system will be installed on the first two train sets in early 2015.
