Toshiba Corporation, in consortium with IHI Corporation, Hyundai Engineering, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction, has won an EPC contract for a 2,000 MW ultra-super-critical coal-fired power generation project in Mukim Jimah in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The EPC contract was signed with a special purpose company established by Mitsui and 1MDB. Under the EPC contract, Toshiba will supply and install two units of 1,000 MW ultra-supercritical steam turbines and generators, plus other main equipment, including plant control equipment, main transformers, and switchyard. Toshiba will also play a role in the marine civil works. Mitsui and 1MDB were awarded the project and the right to construct, own, and operate the 2,000 MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plant through an international competitive bidding process organised by the Energy Commission of Malaysia. The power plant will sell the electricity to Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia’s national power utility, under a power purchase agreement (PPA). The first unit of the project is expected to start commercial operation in 2018, and the second in 2019.
