The $400 million Southeast Asia Japan Cable (SJC) system that links Brunei, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and the Philippines has become operational. The SJC is an 8,900 km cable system that consists of six fibre pairs with the initial design capacity of 28 Tbps. The cable system has been developed by a consortium comprising Globe Telecom, Brunei International Gateway Sendirian Berhad, China Mobile International, the China Telecommunications Corporation, China Telecom Global Limited, Donghwa Telecom, Google, KDDI Corporation, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International, and TOT Public Company Limited. The system will enhance the network resilience of partner operators by offering cable diversity and enhancing reliability in the event of a cable breakage, as the SJC cable route circumvents the earthquake-prone zone in North Asia.
