The Governments of Malaysia and Singapore have been advancing collaboration on renewable energy through the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), which is expected to benefit both nations. The zone will not only focus on renewable energy (RE) development but also enhance foreign investments, economic cooperation, and facilitate the movement of goods and people between the two countries. The Government of Malaysia sees this cooperation as a means to meet Singapore’s energy needs and promote industries that add value to its economy. Discussions are in the final phase, with the joint agreement for the JS-SEZ.

The JS-SEZ will serve as a strategic platform for Malaysia, to attract foreign investors, including those from Singapore, seeking to expand their business operations. This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s broader economic goals under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which emphasises reforms to reduce social and economic gaps while ensuring inclusive growth.
