The Government of Laos has announced plans to upgrade Nong Khang Airport in the Houaphanh province into an international airport. The facility was previously funded and built by the Government of Vietnam

The build-transfer (BT) project will be developed at an investment of USD82 million and will be financed through a loan from Vietnam-based Hoang Anh Gia Lai Agriculture JSC.

Currently, the airport only serves small domestic flights. The runway will be expanded by 3 km to accommodate larger aircrafts. The airport upgrade aligns with the national development plans of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and the Department of Civil Aviation.
