Quang Tri province’s government has inked an MoU with Thailand’s vertically integrated power utility Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) for the construction of a 1,200 MW thermal power plant in Hai Lang district. According to the MoU, EGAT will invest $1.26 billion in the project. The power plant will be constructed on a build–operate–transfer basis and transferred to Vietnam after a 25-year period. The project, which will include two turbines, is expected to generate 7.25 billion kWh of commercial electricity. While the first turbine is expected to be operational by 2019–20, the second is likely to come onstream in 2030.
