Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EECO), a special economic zone of three provinces in the eastern part of the country, has partnered with state-owned National Telecommunications (NT) to launch the country’s first 5G pilot. Other business operators are planned to be included in the project through an infrastructure-sharing concept that is expected to capitalise on government assets and reduce the investment duplication between the public and private sectors.

As a part of the plan to launch the first 5G pilot, the infrastructure around the Ban Chang Sub-district Municipality, in the province of Rayong, is currently being upgraded, with the installation of various communications systems. These include frequency technologies that will support the industrial development of 5G.

EECO and NT have recently installed a device to check their 5G Smart Pole system. The system transfers and syncs data with the government, using 5G network signals, to provide real-time access to information and assistance.
