The Department of Rail Transport (DRT) of Thailand has proposed a plan to develop areas in Nong Khai to prepare for railway connection with Laos. Under the development plans, a depot for international trade will be built on an 31.6 acres site near the Nong Khai railway station. A transhipment yard will be built to handle freight transported by Thai and Chinese trains. A new train bridge is also being planned for the Mekong River, around 30 metres from the current Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. No timeline for these projects has been released yet.

The Government of Thailand anticipates that the rail link will boost trade and tourism between Thailand and China.
