The Government of Thailand has been developing the 323 km Den Chai–Chiang Rai–Chiang Khong double-track railway with an investment of more than THB72.8 billion. The project is expected to improve passenger connectivity across northern Thailand and is targeted to begin operations by 2028.
The railway will extend from Den Chai in Phrae province towards Chiang Rai and Chiang Khong near the Laos border, providing rail access to areas that are currently heavily dependent on road and air transport. The route will pass through Phrae, Lampang, Phayao and Chiang Rai, with 26 stations planned along the corridor.
The project involves extensive construction through the mountainous terrain of northern Thailand, including four major tunnels. The 6. -km Ngao Tunnel in Lampang is expected to be the longest railway tunnel in Thailand, while the Doi Luang and Mae Ka tunnels will help maintain efficient rail operations through difficult terrain.
For passengers, the new railway is expected to reduce travel times and provide an alternative to existing road and air journeys. The scenic route could also support tourism by improving access to destinations and communities across Phrae, Phayao and Chiang Rai.
The line will also serve as an important regional transport corridor, extending rail connectivity towards Chiang Khong and the Laos border. This is expected to strengthen links between northern Thailand and wider mainland Southeast Asia. With a THB72.8 billion-plus investment, 323 km route, 26 stations and a planned 2028 opening, the project represents a major expansion of Thailand’s northern passenger rail network.
