The Government of Thailand is advancing its nationwide common ticketing policy following the implementation of the Common Ticketing System Management Act 2025, which came into force on December 28, 2025. The initiative aims to enable passengers to use a single payment method across all public transport modes while reducing travel costs.
As part of this transition, Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited has begun rolling out EMV contactless fare payments on MRT Blue and Purple lines. Passengers can now use bank-issued contactless cards from networks such as Visa, Mastercard, and UnionPay for seamless entry, reducing the need for dedicated transit cards.
The operator plans to fully phase out existing MRT and MRT Plus cards from June 1, 2026, replacing them with EMV-based payments and Mangmoom EMV cards. Additional measures include eliminating transfer entry fees, introducing a unified fare structure, and establishing a dedicated fund to support system rollout.
Passengers will have three main options: using existing bank cards, switching to Mangmoom EMV cards to retain fare discounts, or integrating parking and transit payments through Smart Parking for Park & Ride journeys. Refunds for old cards will remain available until December 31, 2027.
