The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) has plans to invite bids for the $2.2 billion upgrade of the Yangon-Mandalay railway by end-2016. Private companies will be roped in to carry out the upgrade in a phased manner. Work on the railway project, led by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is scheduled to start in 2017 and should be complete by 2025.
