State-owned telecommunications company Telkom will build an underwater cable communication system by installing an optic fibre network from Padang to Tua Peijat village in Kepulauan Mentawai district of West Sumatra province to improve internet access. The work is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2018. The system will be in the form of a 157 km underwater optic fibre network equipped with a big tower in Tua Peijat in Sipora Island. The tower will emit signals through radio networks to facilitate internet networks on other islands.
