Telecommunications providers in the Philippines have unveiled a comprehensive three-year plan aimed at improving network infrastructure in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) by 2028. Plans call for the construction of new cell towers in remote regions through public-private partnerships (PPPs).
The proposed strategy also includes maximising existing infrastructure while constructing new towers, as well as providing subsidized SIM cards with data plans to unconnected households. Each SIM will offer an automatic monthly load of 50 gigabytes for a year, sufficient for the average five-member household, enhancing access to education, healthcare, government services, and economic opportunities.
This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to expanding connectivity to underserved communities, which encompass approximately 7,063 barangays and nearly 25 million residents.
