Japan-based Sumitomo Corporation has announced plans to supply power for a smart city it is developing in Hanoi, Vietnam. The company has partnered with BRG Group and plans to use solar and biomass power generation facilities from a nearby industrial park to cover 30-40 per cent of the electricity needs for both the smart city and the industrial park.
Construction of the smart city is scheduled to begin in 2025, with residents expected to move in gradually from 2026. The city will feature a centralized system allowing residents to manage various services, including restaurant and medical institution reservations, monitoring electricity usage, and tracking river water levels for disaster prevention.
The nearby industrial park will contribute over 200 MW of solar and biomass generation capacity. The total investment in energy-efficient equipment, such as heat pumps, is estimated at around USD338 million. Additionally, Sumitomo also plans to install solar panels on factory roofs and possibly on a pond’s surface in the industrial park.
By 2030, Sumitomo aims to decarbonise 100 per cent of the electricity consumed at the smart city and industrial park by combining direct purchases from other renewable energy sources and carbon credits.
