A consortium of companies, comprising Sumitomo Corporation, NEC Corporation, and NTT Communications Corporation, has announced the completion of their communications infrastructure project in Myanmar to improve Internet connectivity and support economic development. The consortium is providing operational support for the communications infrastructure. The plan capitalises on the Official Development Assistance (ODA) grant of 1.71 billion yen given by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to the Myanmar government, following its request for assistance from the Japanese government. This is the first infrastructure project in Myanmar to be funded by an ODA grant from Japan since the latter’s adoption of a new economic cooperation policy towards Myanmar in April 2012.
