Japan-based Sumitomo Corporation and NEC Corporation have concluded a contract with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of Myanmar to support the country’s Emergency Communications Network Improvement Plan. The plan involves development of the country’s communications network, including fixed line telephones, mobile phones, and internet access. This is the first infrastructure project in Myanmar to capitalise on official development assistance since the Japanese government’s adoption of a new economic cooperation policy towards Myanmar in April 2012. JICA is providing financial assistance of Yen 1.71 billion for the project.
