Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has been selected as the first site in Vietnam to conduct studies on the electric transportation development plan. The plan is a part of the country’s nationally determined contributions (NDC) with support from the Government of Germany to enhance capacity of the electric vehicle (EV) network as well as a legislative framework to facilitate development of e-transportation in line with low-carbon solutions.

Electricity infrastructure has been deemed a key aspect in the successful execution of the development plan and will be a priority under the national electric distribution plan. Additionally, the Ministry of Transport (DoTr) will collaborate with consulting units to build mechanisms and a master plan for the transport project.

In addition to the transition to EVs, there have also been recommendations to prioritise the development of railway and waterway transportation in the city. Currently, the share of land used for transportation in HCMC is 12.2 per cent, and the rate of development of transportation infrastructure is slow. Meanwhile, the number of automobiles on the road has increased, resulting in higher pollution in the city.
