The Stock Exchange of Thailand has signed an MoU with the state-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to jointly study product or platform development, seeking to foster a wholesale electricity market and pave the way to become the electricity trading hub of the ASEAN region.

The MoU covers a one-year period starting September 4, 2019, and ending September 3, 2020 to prepare for a “capacity market”, a three- to four-year period for an advance trading programme and an “energy market”, a daily energy trading platform. The cooperation covers the study of the development of a wholesale electricity market trading platform, energy industry model, energy trading mechanism, and wholesale PPA (both in advance and during the day) and is expected to help prepare for market liberalisation and promote competition in the energy industry.
