The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has received the first 20 units of a new electro-diesel trains and are scheduled to undergo test runs before being deployed on long-distance journeys. The first test run of the Ultraman trains will be between Bangkok’s Bang Sue Station and Chachoengsao. The trains are expected to commence public services in June 2022 after electric, braking and safety systems are thoroughly assessed.

The Ultraman trains are designed to carry both cargo and passengers on long-distance routes. The units were produced by China-based CRRC Qishuyan Company Limited under a THB6.5 billion deal. The manufacturer is scheduled to supply 30 more units by 2023.

The trains feature an electronic air brake system and are more fuel efficient and environment friendly compared to traditional rail vehicles. The new fleet is expected to generate additional revenue for SRT as well as improve rail transport in Thailand.
