SP Group, a power grid operator, has partnered with France-based EDF Group to develop the infrastructure for a subsea cable to import renewable energy (RE) from Indonesia to Singapore. The project will also include works on a 1,000 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) plant to source the energy.  The two power companies have also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to conduct commercial, regulatory, and technical feasibility studies for the subsea cable. The partners will also explore opportunities to expand the network to include other clean energy sources in Indonesia.

The Government of Singapore has been attempting to meet the country’s power demand by importing RE, such as solar energy, from neighbouring countries like Malaysia. Other plans include a 740 km undersea cable to import electricity from Australia and the ongoing trials of hydropower imports from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia.
