Smart Communications was named the best mobile operator at the World Communication Awards (WCA). Smart, owned by the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, beat Australia’s Telstra and Middle Eastern operator Ooredoo to bag the top prize.
Smart has earned the recognition for the second consecutive year. In 2014, Smart won in the Invitation-Only category, beating six other finalists including Globe Telecom and Turkcell.
Smart was recognised as the best mobile operator for its ability to develop its business by moving into new areas or through service innovation. Smart posted an all-time high growth in its mobile data and broadband businesses in the first nine months of 2015. Its combined revenue reached PhP 15.6 billion, driven by a 139 per cent rise in mobile data usage within the network.
Smart has also signed agreements with leading global digital technology companies like Uber and Airbnb, and with entertainment companies like iflix, FOX, MCA Music and Sony Music.
The WCA is organised yearly by the London-based industry publication Total Telecom.
