Smart and AST sign MoU to build space-based broadband network in Philippines

Smart Communications Incorporated (Smart) and AST SpaceMobile Incorporated (AST) have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a space-based broadband network in the Philippines.  According to the terms of the MoU, AST will extend cellular broadband network coverage to nearly 70 million Smart customers following the launch of the SpaceMobile service. The first commercial satellite is set to launch in the second half of 2022 or early 2023.

The firms will explore into ways to extend AST’s wireless broadband coverage to the Philippines mainland, as well as its islands and surrounding waters. Once fully operational, AST is expected to address the country’s connectivity gaps in broadband services.
