Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB) has launched a Carbon Zero Grand Challenge, under which the agency will award SGD6.5 million for innovative solutions that can reduce carbon emissions from wastewater treatment plants. The agency is looking for carbon collection, utilisation, removal, and other solutions that can be integrated into its operations and scale up to commercial scale within a decade or less. The challenge will be conducted over a period of 45 months in two phases followed by a pilot-scale demonstration.

In the first phase, up to six proposals will be awarded SGD250,000 each to develop a proof of concept. In the second phase, participants will demonstrate how their solution can be integrated into PUB’s operations and develop a detailed design for a pilot project. In the last phase, up to two proposals will be awarded SGD2.5 million each to showcase a 1 KT-scale version of their technology at a PUB facility in Singapore. The agency will start accepting proposals from October 19, 2021 to February 24, 2022.
