The East Coast Integrated Depot, the world’s first combined train and bus depot, is 98 per cent externally complete and on track to open in 2026. Situated on a single site, the depot integrates three train depots for the Downtown, Thomson-East Coast, and East-West MRT lines stacked vertically, alongside a three-storey bus depot. This design enables independent operation while saving 44 hectares of land and SDG2 billion in costs compared to building separate facilities. It will accommodate up to 220 trains and over 500 buses, including charging capabilities for 240 electric buses.
Construction began in 2016 but faced delays due to the pandemic, pushing the initial 2024 completion date to 2026. The project also features eco-friendly elements like solar panels and sound-absorbing panels. Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) plans other multi-storey bus depots in the coming years, such as those in Sengkang West and Yishun, to support the country’s growing fleet of electric buses.
