Singapore that has one of the world’s major ports for the fuelling of cargo-laden ships is working on regulations to fuel ships with natural gas in addition to oil. Over the past two years, the maritime regulator, the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), has been collaborating with industry partners on joint industry projects to study and assess the potential for LNG bunkering (the process of fuelling marine vessels) in Southeast Asia. According to the MPA, the licensing requirements for LNG bunker suppliers and craft operators will be ready for an industry consultation by end-2013. It will also develop an industry guide, or a “Singapore Standard for LNG bunkering operations”.
