Royal Dutch Shell Public Limited Company (Shell) will replace the current diesel boats with electric ferries to transport passengers between mainland Singapore and its oil refining and chemicals plant on Bukom Island. Shell has also awarded a design, build, operate (DBO) contract to Singapore-based Penguin International Limited to manage the electric ferries.
The boats are expected to be operational during the first half of 2023 and once operational, will be the first fully electric ferry service in Singapore. Currently, up to 3,000 ferry passengers travel using the ferry route each day.
