The Government of the Philippines’ effort in developing public transport systems in the provinces of Java and Sumatra regions have shown positive results. One of the notable programs is the Teman Bus shuttle bus program launched under the buy-the-service (BTS) scheme in eleven pilot cities including Bandung in West Java as well as Medan and Palembang in Sumatra.
In Medan, the Trans Metro Deli bus rapid transit (BRT) system was launched under the BTS scheme and is operated by PT Medan Bus Transport. Currently, 72 buses are operational across five corridors. The shift of motorcycle users to Trans Metro Deli has reached 52 per cent with the BRT systems serving 48,000 daily passengers.
Additionally, TransJakarta plans to deploy an additional 100 electric buses by the end of 2022 under the BTS scheme to promote sustainable transport.
