PTT, Thailand’s largest oil and gas conglomerate by sales volume, has signed an agreement to buy 2 million tonnes (mt) of LNG per year from Qatar Liquefied Gas Company over the next 20 years. The first delivery will take place in January 2015. According to PTT, the contract will help ensure Thailand’s long-term national energy security, particularly as production from the Gulf of Thailand and imports from neighbouring countries are insufficient to meet the country’s growing gas demand.
