Thailand’s first urban light rail network outside of Bangkok has been proposed and approved in the north-eastern province of Khon Kaen under the Smart City Development Programme. The project will be developed by Khon Kaen Transit System (KKTS), a public company founded by the five Khon Kaen municipalities.

Construction work on the 26-km-long light rail system is expected to commence in 2024 at an estimated investment of THB21 billion. The light rail system will also connect with the China–Laos–Thailand high-speed rail line.
