The Government of the Philippines has commissioned the 22 MW Tanawon Geothermal Power Plant in Sorsogon City, developed by the Energy Development Corporation (EDC), a subsidiary of First Gen Corporation. The PHP7 billion facility, completed in 27 months, is part of the government’s broader push to expand renewable energy capacity and enhance energy security under the Philippine Energy Plan.
The plant is expected to generate 159,000 MWh of electricity annually, helping to reduce approximately 38,000 tons of carbon emissions per year. It is the second of seven geothermal projects planned by EDC, following the inauguration of the 29MW Palayan Binary Plant in July 2024.
Further, the project aligns with the country’s goal to increase the share of renewables to 50 percent by 2040. EDC’s future geothermal developments aim to further support the Philippines’ decarbonisation and sustainability goals.
