The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that it is planning to deploy a PHP4.5 billion automated fare collection (AFC) system on public transport in the Philippines, allowing commuters to pay using bank cards. The system will be deployed on buses, jeepneys, rail lines and air services.

A feasibility study for the same is currently underway and will be submitted to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) once completed. The AFC system is expected to be deployed by 2023.

The system will also host multiple card issuers, including Mastercard and Visa, and passengers can use both their debit and credit cards to settle fares. The AFC system will also support the Beep card, a stored value ticket for rail lines, and its operability will also be expanded to other transport systems.
