The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has allocated PHP110 billion for 2022 to fund the development of Philippines’ land-based rail system for high-capacity transport for goods and people. Of the PHP110 billion for rail infrastructure projects, about 92 per cent are foreign funded. The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has also made further budgetary allocations for aviation, airport and maritime projects in the country.

A part of the budget will be used to finance the trial of a subway project in the first quarter of 2022. However, the DBM has not allocated any funding for the Mindanao rail project.

The rail projects will be developed to be climate resilient and DOTr will leverage the technical experience of Japanese developers for upcoming rail projects in the Philippines.
