The Philippines’ Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans to launch a tender for variable renewable energy (VRE) paired with energy storage before the end of 2024. This auction aligns with the Philippines Energy Plan 2023-2050 which aims to increase the share of renewable energy (RE), targeting a 35 per cent share by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2040.

The upcoming green energy auction will focus on integrated VRE and energy storage systems, promoting the adoption of these solutions and enhancing fiscal incentives. The BESS paired with renewables will be treated as part of the complete renewable energy generation asset under the auction’s regulatory conditions, ensuring they maintain priority dispatch status.

Additionally, the government will launch a call for RE and energy storage microgrids in rural areas to reduce reliance on diesel generation. This initiative will target the deployment of solar PV, BESS, and diesel genset backup at approximately 48 locations across the Philippines.
