The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) has initiated the fourth cycle of its Green Energy Auction (GEA-4), offering 9,378 MW of new solar and wind capacity, integrated with battery storage. This auction, part of the government’s renewable energy expansion strategy, introduces Integrated Renewable Energy and Storage Systems (IRESS) for the first time. Selected projects will secure 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) backed by the government.

IRESS aims to enhance grid stability as energy demand rises. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) will oversee tariff indexation, adjusting rates based on operational costs. Winning bidders must meet strict deadlines, with operational milestones set between 2026 and 2029. This initiative aligns with the Philippines’ goal to derive 35 per cent of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2040, requiring substantial investment in storage and grid modernisation. The auction is expected to attract significant local and international competition, influencing future energy pricing and industrial competitiveness.
