Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), the state oil and gas company, and the Government of Sabah have launched the Sabah Gas Masterplan to develop the state’s natural gas resources, including the development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility. The masterplan was developed after conducting a joint study between the two agencies.

The plan calls for the development of a 2 million-tonne-per-year LNG facility at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park, that will allow the Government of Sabah to expand its LNG distribution across the state.

The state is expected to have 120 mmscfd of gas that can be made accessible under the masterplan for the development of key industries in the state. The government will undertake gas marketing and distribution. Additionally, the masterplan identifies a variety of petrochemical derivatives that can be used to attract investors based on market demand and locally accessible feedstock.
