The government of the state of Penang has accelerated its efforts to fast-track the delayed Sungai Perak raw water project. The government has requested the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water to intervene and facilitate an agreement between it and the neighbouring Perak state, which still has to agree to provide raw water for the project. The project entails the construction of a water treatment plant with a capacity of 1 million cubic metres per day, pumping stations, and other transmission infrastructure. The project was stalled due to Perak’s insistence on selling treated water, which Penang was reluctant to buy as it would force water tariffs up. The estimated cost of the project is $625 million.
