Penang authorities have begun relocating traders along sections of the planned Mutiara Line LRT corridor, as major construction works are set to commence in January 2026. The relocation is being carried out in phases to align with construction readiness along different sections of the route, with the overall project targeted for completion by December 2031.

Contractors will only proceed with works in areas where relocation has been completed, while construction in other locations will begin once all affected traders have been resettled. He noted that most traders have been cooperative, provided that suitable alternative sites and proper licensing arrangements are offered.

The 29.5-km Mutiara Line LRT, featuring 21 stations, is a key component of Penang’s long-term public transport strategy. The line will connect Penang Island with the mainland, linking Penang South Reclamation, George Town, and Penang Sentral, and is expected to ease congestion and support mobility in one of Southeast Asia’s major electronics and semiconductor hubs.
