The Government of Malaysia will grant additional funds to expedite works on the Bayan Lepas light rail transit (LRT) project in Penang. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and relevant agencies will also collaborate on proposing a suitable funding model for the urban transit project.

The Bayan Lepas LRT is one of the key infrastructure projects under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP). The 26.8-km-long line will link Komtar to Permatang Damar Laut, with possible extension to the Teluk Kumbar coast. The line was initially approved in 2019, with construction scheduled to commence in 2020. Work has been delayed since.

Land acquisitions have been completed and the project is currently at the tender stage. for the project and is now discussing the matter with Putrajaya before calling for tender. A request for proposal (RFP) was expected to be called during early 2023 but was delayed due to funding issues.
