Oudomxay Province has inaugurated a 1,000-MW solar power project, marking one of Laos’ largest renewable energy developments. The project was developed by CGN Energy Technology (Laos) Company Limited under a concession agreement with the Lao government signed in September 2024, with construction commencing the same month.
The solar farm covers about 2,090 hectares across seven villages in Xay and Namor districts. Construction involved land clearing, landmine removal, internal road development, and electrical infrastructure installation. At the peak of construction, around 800 technical specialists and workers were deployed on site.
Phase I of the project is expected to generate approximately 1.7 billion kWh of electricity annually. Power will be transmitted to China’s Yunnan Province via the China–Laos 500-kV interconnection, strengthening cross-border power trade and supporting regional clean energy transition. The project also forms part of the Northern Laos Interconnected Clean Energy Base, integrating solar, wind, and biomass projects across multiple northern provinces.
