The Myanmar government has selected Qatar-based Ooredoo and Norway-based Telenor Mobile Communications in the nationwide telecommunications licence award process. A third bidder, a consortium consisting of Orange and Marubeni Corporation, has been named as the “backup applicant” in the event that the two successful applicants fail to fulfil the post-selection requirements. The government will now initiate the process of finalising the granting of the two licences and associated spectrum licences to the two successful applicants. Ooredoo and Telenor have committed to developing networks that cover at least 75 per cent of Myanmar within five years of the start of the licencing period.
