The National Grid Corporation of Philippines (NGCP) plans to commission 14 key transmission projects till 2040. These projects are under the Transmission Development Plan for 2019-40, developed for identifying and mitigating the causes of power interruptions and transmission-related outages.
Of these 14 projects, the 230 kV Mindanao backbone project is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. The 230 kV Cebu-Negros-Panay project and the Visayas-Mindanao Grid Connection Project are expected to be completed by December 2020. Further, the 500 kV Metro Manila backbone project is expected to be completed by September 2021 while the Batangas-Mindoro, Palawan-Mindoro and 500 kV Bolo-Laoag backbone projects are expected to be completed by December 2024. In addition, the 230 kV Eastern Mindanao and 500 kV Western Luzon backbone projects are targeted for completion by 2025.
Lastly, the Luzon-Visayas high voltage direct current (HVDC) bipolar operation project is planned to be completed by December 2030, and the 500 kV Nagsaag-Kabugao and 230 kV Cebu-Bohol-Leyte backbone projects by December 2035. Besides, the 230 kV Metro Cebu and Western Mindanao backbone projects are expected to be commissioned by 2040.
