The Myanmar government has decided to privatise 30 domestic airports across the country in 2014. The announcement has followed a call for tenders to renovate the Yangon and Mandalay airports, as well as to build a new international airport at Hanthawaddy. This marks the first time that the private sector has been enlisted in the operation of domestic airports. The tender is slated for January 2014. Foreign investors are permitted to participate in the process, but local businesses will be prioritised under the country’s current investment law.
