On October 30, 2019 Myanmar and Thailand opened the second friendship bridge that crosses the Thaungyin river to better facilitate trade activities between the two nations. The Myanmar-Thai Friendship Bridge-II has been built with the help of Thailand and links Myawady in Myanmar’s south-eastern Kayin state with Mae Sot in Thailand’s Tak province. The 270 metre bridge, with an approach road measuring 3.6 km on the Myanmar side and 17.5 km on the Thai side, has cost nearly RM 545 million. According to the Myanmar Highway Freight Transportation Services Association, the new bridge will help lessen illegal trade and improve transportation of goods between the two countries.
