The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) will construct a PHP3 billion tunnel in Bulacan in an attempt to improve Manila’s water security. The 6.4 km tunnel 5 will be built from Ipo Dam to Bigte and will run parallel to tunnel 4, which was commissioned in 2020.
Once completed, tunnel 5 will deliver an additional 19 cubic metres/second of water from Ipo Dam Reservoir to Bigte Transition Basin.
The proposed tunnel will be built as a part of MWSS’ Angat Water Transmission Improvement Project (AWTIP) which aims to improve the reliability and water security of the Umiray-Angat-Ipo raw water conveyance system. Additionally, the tunnel will also provide operational flexibility during the maintenance or repair of existing tunnels.
